"If one of those bombs were to have gone off, that town house [where Robert Goldstein lived] would have been destroyed," Baixauli said. "If the others exploded, we would have lost most of that town house complex."
Mark argues that while we are winning the shooting war, we are losing the war of ideas. While Islamists call for the killing of Christians and Jews from state funded mosques on state funded radio, our intellectuals and leaders call Islam a "religion of peace." While Islamists accept as valid only their world-view, our intellectuals say that all world-views are equally valid.
There are people actually saying that our tolerance is a form on intolerance of Muslims. Remember this Norwegian report?
[I]n September 2001 (only five days, in fact, before the destruction of the World Trade Center), the Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet reported that 65 percent of rapes of Norwegian women were performed by "non-Western" immigrants–a category that, in Norway, consists mostly of Muslims. [Muslims represent a mere 2.2% of the population of Norway.] The article quoted a professor of social anthropology at the University of Oslo (who was described as having "lived for many years in Muslim countries") as saying that "Norwegian women must take their share of responsibility for these rapes" because Muslim men found their manner of dress provocative. One reason for the high number of rapes by Muslims, explained the professor, was that in their native countries "rape is scarcely punished," since Muslims "believe that it is women who are responsible for rape." The professor’s conclusion was not that Muslim men living in the West needed to adjust to Western norms, but the exact opposite: "Norwegian women must realize that we live in a multicultural society and adapt themselves to it."Steyn mentions Briton’s Lady Kennedy who said,
"One of the things that we are too ready to insist upon is that we are the tolerant people and that the intolerance is something that belongs to other countries like Islam. And I’m not sure that’s true."Lady Kennedy doesn't know what's true because she has sacrificed moral clarity to the cult of tolerance. Lady Kennedy: We are tolerant. They are intolerant. Their culture is inferior to ours because it has succombed to the intellectual virus of radical Islam. Its okay to be part of our culture, recognize it as superior, and not fell guilty about it.
So how is Steyn waging the war of ideas? He starts by renaming the conflict.
[T]he very name of the conflict was the first evasion. It’s not a ‘war on terror’, it’s a war on radical Islamism, a worldwide scourge operating on five continents...
George W. Bush had a rare opportunity after 11 September. He could have attempted to reverse the most toxic tide in the Western world: the sappy multiculturalism that insists all cultures are equally valid, even as they’re trying to kill us. He could have argued that Western self-loathing is a psychosis we can no longer afford. He could have told the teachers’ unions that there was more to the second world war than the internment of Japanese-Americans, and it’s time they started teaching it to our children. A couple of days after 11 September, I wrote in these pages, ‘Those Western nations who spent last week in Durban finessing and nuancing evil should understand now that what is at stake is whether the world’s future will belong to liberal democracy and the rule of law, or to darker forces.’ But a year later, after a brief hiccup, the Western elites have resumed finessing and nuancing evil all the more enthusiastically, and the ‘compassionate conservative’ shows no stomach for a fight at least as important as any on the battlefield. The Islamists are militarily weak but culturally secure. A year on, the West is just the opposite. There’s more than one way to lose a war.
Saddam has chemical weapons of mass destruction. He has a demonstrated willingness to use them on people. He doesn't have nukes yet, but he is working as fast as he can on that. He hates the United States. This is the end of the debate for most Americans.
But Safire states that understanding Saddam's connection with terrorism is important because terrorism is a likely delivery vehicle for an Iraqi developed weapon of mass destruction.
So what are Iraq's links to terrorism? Check out my August 21, 2002 post below. And Safire's research sets out details on Qaeda-Saddam joint ventures to assasinate Kurdish leadership and establish chemical weapons factories.
I definitely have some feelings about any outside group exerting this kind of influence in a race, and I've been receiving angry calls from black voters all day, saying they should rally against Jewish candidates," said Representative Eddie Bernice Johnson, a Texas Democrat who is the chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus.Oh where do I begin? Ms. Johnson is speaking like a Georgian who resents Jewish carpetbagging. But wait...where is Ms. Johnson from? Texas? And she is ranting about outsiders influencing a race?
"To have non-African-Americans from around the country putting millions into a race to unseat one of our leaders for expressing her right of free speech is definitely a problem," Ms. Johnson said.
Ms. Johnson is angry that non-African-Americans were involved in fund raising for the opposition candidate. If the opposition was racially motivated, Ms. Johnson's objection would be reasonable. But the opposition was supporting another black candidate! The opposition could have supported a white candidate and still have not have been racially motivated. But in this instance it couldn't be more clear that Ms. Johnson is using anti-semitism in support of liberal ideology.
Lastly, Ms. Johnson is whining that McKinney was ousted for exercising her right of free speech. Duh. Why is any office-holder defeated? Usually because she says or does something that the public disagrees with. Ms. McKinney's right of free speech is not exclusive of the public's right to disagree. Its called "the marketplace of ideas" Ms. Johnson, look into it.
Ziad Jarrah was the pilot of the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania on September 11. Before going to Germany for college, Ziad was described as secular and fun-loving.
Upon arriving in Germany, Ziad was picked up at the airport by his uncle, Assem Omar Jarrah. This uncle paid for Ziad’s apartment and otherwise took care of him while he was in Germany.
The German paper Der Spiegel reports that before German Reunification, Uncle Assem was an informer for the Stasi, the East German Secret Police. But Uncle Assem was a double-agent who worked with Abu Nidal’s Iraqi sponsored terrorist operation that specialized in recruiting agents among Arab college students in Germany for terrorist operations throughout Europe.
The leader of Ziad’s terrorist cell was Mohammed Atta. According to Czech Intelligence and the White House, Atta traveled twice to “Prague to meet Khalil Ibrahim Samir al-Ani, an Iraqi agent later expelled from the Czech Republic as a spy.”
To recap: the arab college student Ziad Jarrah ends up under the command of Mohammed Atta on September 11 after living under the protection of an uncle who specialized in turning arab college students into terrorists for an Iraqi sponsored organization. And Mohammed Atta himself met twice with an Iraqi spy.
Oh man, I love this!
"A hostage-taking cannot be ruled out," a police spokesman said.
